‘Revitalizing the city centre of Den Helder’

During the last few decades people have moved from Den Helder. The population is shrinking. One of the main reasons of this is the neglected inner city. The task for West8, an international office for urban design and landscape architecture, to rethink its content and character as a Maritime City.

They designed a new inner city with a reposition towards the sea. In the central city the main ambition is the restoring of the existing urban tissue, housing and public space. Another idea of West8 is the addition of a central park.

A new town hall, a new theatre and another strong cultural program at the former naval base is central to this development.

They have already begun with the revitalization. Pieces of the future central park have been realized.
